Phase-6 of Lok Sabha elections 2024 to see 889 candidates across 8 states and UTs

39% Candidates In Phase 6 Of Lok Sabha Polls Are Crorepatis

In the upcoming sixth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, a total of 889 candidates from eight states and union territories are set to contest. This includes 20 candidates for the adjourned poll in the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency of Jammu and Kashmir.

Initially, 1978 nominations were filed across 57 parliamentary constituencies (PCs) for this phase. However, after scrutiny, only 900 of these nominations were deemed valid. The significant filtering process underlines the stringent criteria in place to ensure that only eligible candidates make it to the ballot.

In detail, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of nominations with 470 from 14 PCs, followed by Haryana with 370 nominations across 10 PCs. The Ranchi parliamentary constituency in Jharkhand saw the highest number of nominations at 70, closely followed by the North East Delhi parliamentary constituency in Delhi, with 69 nominations.

An expert in electoral studies, Dr. Anil Kumar, commented on the statistics, saying, “The large number of nominations initially filed shows the vibrant democratic engagement in India. However, the rigorous scrutiny process ensures that only serious candidates contest, which is crucial for maintaining the quality of our democratic processes.”

The average number of contesting candidates per parliamentary constituency for this phase is 15, reflecting a competitive electoral environment.

Regarding the unique situation in Jammu and Kashmir, 28 nominations were initially filed in the third phase for Anantnag-Rajouri, out of which 21 were found valid. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the poll was adjourned to the sixth phase, and now 20 candidates remain in the fray.

Political analyst Priya Joshi noted, “The adjourned poll in Anantnag-Rajouri adds a layer of complexity to this phase of elections. It will be interesting to see how this impacts voter turnout and sentiment in the region.”

As the candidates gear up for the elections, the focus remains on the diverse political landscape and the issues at stake. “The dynamics in states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana will be particularly important to watch, given the large number of candidates and the pivotal role these states play in national politics,” added senior analyst, Rajesh Singh.

With the elections approaching, all eyes are on these candidates as they make their final appeals to the electorate, hoping to secure a mandate to serve in the Lok Sabha.
