In the last lap of the world’s largest electoral exercise, the Election Commission of India gears up for the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections set for tomorrow (1st June). This phase will see voting in 57 parliamentary constituencies across eight states and union territories, including Bihar, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Alongside, 42 Assembly constituencies in Odisha will also go to polls, marking the end of a polling marathon that started on April 19.
The process so far has encompassed 486 Lok Sabha seats across 28 states and union territories, conducted in a smooth and peaceful manner. The upcoming phase involves over 10.06 crore electors, including approximately 5.24 crore male, 4.82 crore female, and 3574 third-gender voters, distributed over about 1.09 lakh polling stations. An impressive workforce of 10.9 lakh polling officials has been deployed to facilitate the process.
To ensure the safety and comfort of voters amidst the challenging hot weather, polling stations are equipped with essential amenities like water, shade, toilets, and ramps. Advanced logistical arrangements include 13 special trains and eight helicopter sorties in Himachal Pradesh to transport polling and security personnel efficiently.
Dr. Meena Sandhu, a political analyst, commented, “The final phase is a crucial juncture in India’s democratic process, reflecting the Election Commission’s commitment to conduct elections seamlessly across diverse geographic and climatic conditions.”
Dr. Rajiv Kumar, a governance expert, added, “The meticulous deployment of surveillance teams and strict monitoring measures have been pivotal in maintaining the integrity and fairness of the elections. This phase is significant in reinforcing the democratic values cherished by the nation.”
As the polls draw to a close, the focus shifts to the counting of votes scheduled for June 4, with the nation awaiting the outcomes that will shape the next government.
