Election 2024: BJP leading on 242 seats, Congress on 95; Bloodbath on Dalal Street

642 Million voters have cast their vote in the World's Largest Elections | General Elections 2024

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA is leading on 294 seats, while the INDIA bloc is ahead on 228 seats as the counting of votes is underway for Lok Sabha elections 2024. The INDIA bloc has defied most exit poll trends which projected less that 180 seats for the opposition coalition. BJP appears to be suffering a setback in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The counting of votes for Lok Sabha elections 2024 is underway. This year, polling for 543 constituencies commenced on April 19 and concluded on June 1 which took place in seven phases.

Following the conclusion of Phase 7 Lok Sabha elections on Saturday, all major exit polls predicted clean sweep for BJP-led NDA at the Centre.

As per the exit polls, the BJP is expected to improve its 2019 tally of 303 seats. India-Today-My Axis poll and Today’s Chanakya predicted that the NDA tally would surpass 400 seats. ABP-CVoter allotted 353-383 seats while Jan Ki Baat projected resounding victory with tally anywhere between 362-392 seats.

Meanwhile, as election race gets tighter than what exit polls predicted a sharp selloff in the Indian stock market resulted in a significant loss for investors, reducing their wealth by approximately ₹38 lakh crore in intraday trade on Tuesday, June 4. The overall market capitalisation (mcap) of companies listed on the BSE plummeted to nearly ₹388 lakh crore around 12:15 pm on Tuesday against nearly ₹426 lakh crore at the previous session’s close.

The Indian stock market witnessed an overall sharp selloff after early trends showed that the election result could be tighter than exit polls had predicted.
