Manipur’s spiralling violence calls for immediate government action

In the ongoing struggle for peace in Manipur, the northeastern state continues to face severe ethnic violence, which has escalated to the highest levels ever recorded in recent months. Over 180 lives have been lost since the violence erupted in May last year, deeply affecting the region’s socio-political stability.

The current conflict was triggered on May 3, 2023, following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill districts. This march was primarily a protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Meitei, who make up about 53% of Manipur’s population and predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley, have been at the center of this contention. In contrast, the tribal groups, including Nagas and Kukis, which constitute about 40% of the population, are mostly settled in the hill districts and oppose this demand.

In a recent significant development, Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh convened a crucial meeting with representatives from ten different political parties. This assembly was aimed at formulating a unified approach to address the dire situation in the state. The Chief Minister emphasized that the discussions held were constructive and showcased a collective commitment to work towards the welfare and stabilization of Manipur.

Adding to the state efforts, the Central Government has also intervened by sending a three-member team from the Home Ministry to assess the situation firsthand and support the state government in mitigating the violence. This central intervention underlines the critical nature of the unrest and the government’s resolution to restore peace and order.

The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur not only poses a significant threat to the lives and property of the local populace but also raises important questions about the long-term socio-political implications for the region. As the state and central governments work collaboratively to control the situation, the focus remains on immediate peace restoration and laying a groundwork for enduring reconciliation and stability in the state.
