India aims to surpass Tokyo 2020 medal haul at Paris Olympics

The Paris Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, will feature athletes competing in 329 events across 32 sports, including four new additions. For the first time, the opening ceremony will begin on the river Seine, with an armada of boats carrying over 200 delegations of athletes through the city.

Indian athletes will be in the spotlight, including Neeraj Chopra, PV Sindhu, Indian archers, and the men’s hockey team. Neeraj Chopra, the defending javelin throw champion, will be a key figure. India aims to surpass its biggest medal haul from Tokyo 2020, with expectations high for various sports, particularly shooting.

In shooting, trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta secured India’s first Paris 2024 quota at the 2022 ISSF World Championships but did not make it to the final team after the national trials. Prithviraj Tondaiman was assigned the quota in the category instead. This marks the first time India has secured a quota in every Olympic shooting category.

Renowned sports medicine expert Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, chief medical officer of the Indian contingent, assured the media that athletes are in prime condition. “All the athletes that are going for the Olympics are fit right now. Some athletes will have minor niggles here and there. I am not going to be discussing any specific injuries to any athlete that they’ve had in the past, but all of them who are there are there because they are going to be capable and they’re gonna be fit enough,” he said.

Recently, the Indian contingent has shown promising performances in the run-up to the Olympics. The men’s hockey team secured a gold medal at the Asian Champions Trophy, bolstering their confidence ahead of the Games. PV Sindhu has maintained her top form, winning the Singapore Open, and Neeraj Chopra continues to break records, recently setting a new national record in javelin throw at the Diamond League.
