The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata is currently at the center of a crisis following the violent death of a postgraduate trainee doctor and subsequent vandalism by a mob, sparking widespread outrage among the medical community and prompting a high-level investigation.
The situation escalated quickly after the body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was discovered last week, leading to protests from the medical staff demanding better security. The protests intensified after a mob attacked the hospital, damaging the emergency ward and other parts of the facility. Concerns over the safety of female doctors led to the temporary suspension of the protests, as the police resorted to using tear gas to disperse the unruly crowd.
During his visit to the hospital, Governor CV Ananda Bose met with the protesting junior doctors, offering assurances of support and swift justice. “I am with you and we will work together to solve this,” Governor Bose told the demonstrators. “I promise you justice. My ears and eyes are open,” he added, reflecting a strong commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the medical community.
The gravity of the case attracted the attention of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has since taken over the investigation. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the murder. Disturbingly, the victim’s parents have alleged that their daughter was gang-raped, with forensic evidence suggesting the involvement of multiple assailants.
A medical student from RG Kar Medical College, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed the deep impact of the incident on the student community: “We are shaken and deeply troubled by the events that have unfolded. It’s a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities we face, and it underscores the urgent need for enhanced protection and systemic changes within our institutions.”
The CBI’s investigation is focusing on the crime scene, court proceedings, and coordination with Kolkata Police to ensure a thorough examination of the events. The forensic team is meticulously gathering evidence, including fingerprints, footprints, hair, and other biological samples, to establish a clear link between the accused and the crime.
In the backdrop of these troubling events, striking doctors across the city are advocating for a Central Healthcare Protection Act to bolster safety measures for medical personnel, amid increasing concerns about violence against healthcare workers.
