Kolkata RG Kar Case: Conviction Announced in Rape and Murder of Junior Doctor

Kolkata sessions court has convicted Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, for the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The sentencing is scheduled for January 20, 2025, with the court considering life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The case dates back to August 9, 2024, when the victim’s body was found in a seminar room on the hospital premises. Based on circumstantial evidence, the court reached its decision, marking a significant step in this high-profile case.

Despite the conviction, the victim’s family has voiced dissatisfaction, believing that others may also be involved. The victim’s mother shared her anguish, saying, “We cannot sleep until all are punished,” highlighting their continued fight for full justice.

The incident triggered nationwide protests, with the medical community demanding stricter safety measures in public hospitals and swift action against those responsible. Following public outcry, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) amid concerns about the initial probe’s credibility.

As part of the investigation, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, was arrested for evidence tampering and financial irregularities. His arrest added another layer of controversy to an already sensitive case.

This conviction serves as a reminder of the urgent need to ensure the safety and security of professionals in their workplaces. The nation now waits for the final verdict, hoping for a punishment that sends a strong message against such crimes.
