Rekha Gupta Takes Oath as Delhi’s New Chief Minister

Rekha Gupta has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) return to power in the capital after 27 years. The oath-taking ceremony took place today (February 20, 2025), at Ramlila Ground.

Gupta, a three-time councillor and former Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), won the 2025 Delhi elections from the Shalimar Bagh constituency. She defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Bandana Kumari by a significant margin of 29,595 votes.

Born in Haryana, Gupta has a strong political background. She started her career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and later became the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996-97. She holds degrees in commerce and law from Magadh University, Bihar.

BJP’s victory in the 2025 Delhi elections was a major political shift, with the party securing 48 out of 70 seats, reducing AAP’s presence in the assembly. Gupta’s leadership is expected to bring changes in governance and policy direction in the capital.

Her oath-taking ceremony is expected to witness high-profile attendees, including senior BJP leaders and celebrities. With this appointment, she becomes the fourth woman to serve as Delhi’s Chief Minister.
