Indian Navy’s ₹60,000 Crore Rafale Deal to Boost Air Force Refuelling

The Indian Navy recently signed a ₹60,000 crore deal to acquire 26 Rafale Marine jets, which will not only strengthen the Navy but also enhance the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) aerial refuelling capability.

One of the key features of this deal is the “buddy-buddy” refuelling system, allowing one Rafale to refuel another mid-air. This system will be integrated into around 10 IAF Rafales, increasing their flight range and endurance. This capability is crucial for long-range missions over the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea, and near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Apart from refuelling, the deal includes ground-based support and software upgrades for the IAF’s existing 36 Rafale jets. These upgrades will improve operational efficiency and combat readiness. The acquisition will also enhance coordination between the Navy and the Air Force, ensuring better defense preparedness.

With this strategic move, India strengthens its aerial capabilities, making its forces more self-reliant and ready for extended missions.
