India Raises Concern Over $21 Million USAID Fund Reports

India on Friday (February 21, 2025) expressed serious concern over reports claiming that USAID, a U.S. government agency, allocated $21 million to influence voter turnout in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called these reports “deeply troubling” and is currently investigating the matter.

Addressing a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “These reports are deeply troubling and indicate possible foreign interference in India’s internal affairs.” He further added, “We have seen information that has been put out by the U.S. administration regarding certain U.S. activities and funding. These are obviously very deeply troubling.”

However, new information suggests that the funds were actually meant for Bangladesh, not India. The $21 million was reportedly allocated to encourage youth participation in Bangladesh’s January 2024 elections, rather than interfering in India’s democratic process.

The controversy started when former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that USAID spent this money to influence voting in India. This statement has fueled political debates within the country, with different parties accusing each other of benefiting from foreign funding.

The Indian government is taking the issue seriously and is inquiring into any possible foreign interference in its internal matters. Meanwhile, USAID has not yet released an official statement clarifying the situation.

The incident has raised concerns about the role of foreign funds in electoral processes and how misinformation can create political tensions. As the investigation continues, India is expected to take necessary steps to ensure the integrity of its democratic system.
