Arab Leaders in Cairo Oppose Trump’s Gaza Plan, Propose New Strategy

Arab leaders gathered in Cairo for a crucial summit to discuss rebuilding the war-torn Gaza Strip and to counter a controversial plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump’s plan suggested relocating Gaza’s 2 million residents to neighboring countries and transforming the region into a luxury hub. This idea has been widely condemned, as forced displacement is illegal under international law. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the proposal, but Arab nations strongly opposed it, citing humanitarian concerns.

Egypt’s $53 Billion Plan

Egypt presented an alternative $53 billion reconstruction plan, focusing on rebuilding Gaza without displacing its residents. The plan aims to:

  • Clear unexploded bombs and 50 million tons of rubble
  • Establish temporary shelters for displaced families
  • Develop sustainable housing and green spaces
  • Invest in renewable energy, industrial zones, and transport infrastructure, including an airport and seaports

The Arab League has backed Egypt’s plan, calling for international funding to support the initiative. However, the proposal also suggests sidelining Hamas, which currently governs Gaza, and replacing it with an international interim body. It remains unclear whether this transition would happen before or after a permanent peace agreement.

Ongoing Regional Tensions

Despite peace efforts, tensions remain high. Israeli forces recently targeted a Hamas leader in the West Bank and a Hezbollah member in Lebanon. Additionally, Israel has halted humanitarian aid to Gaza, accusing militant groups of violating the ceasefire.

The summit’s outcome will be critical in shaping the future of Gaza and the broader Middle East peace process. Arab leaders continue to push for international peacekeeping forces and a lasting solution to the Palestinian crisis.
