India Launches ‘Operation Brahma’ to Aid Myanmar as Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1,600

India has launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to assist Myanmar after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake left more than 1,600 people dead. A US agency has warned that the death toll could exceed 10,000 due to widespread destruction.

In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, expressing condolences and assuring India’s support. “As a close friend and neighbor, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour,” Modi tweeted.

Following the announcement, India dispatched 15 tonnes of relief materials on an Indian Air Force aircraft. The aid includes solar lamps, food packets, kitchen sets, and other essentials for the affected communities. Additionally, 80 NDRF personnel, equipped with specialized rescue gear and search dogs, have been deployed to Naypyidaw for relief operations.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar revealed that INS Satpura and INS Savitri, loaded with 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid, are en route to Yangon’s port for further assistance. These supplies include medical kits, temporary shelters, and drinking water.

India’s swift and large-scale response highlights its role as a first responder in regional disasters, reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian assistance and strengthening ties with Myanmar.
