Indian Army Chief Visits Kashmir After Pahalgam Attack; Tensions Rise with Pakistan

Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi arrived in Jammu and Kashmir to assess the security situation. The attack, which targeted tourists in the Baisaran Valley, has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with both countries taking strong measures in response.

Indian authorities have accused Pakistan of supporting terrorist activities in the region, claiming that the attack was carried out by groups backed by Pakistan. However, Pakistan has denied these allegations. In the aftermath of the attack, India has taken decisive steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water-sharing between the two nations, and closing the Wagah-Attari border, halting all movement and trade between India and Pakistan.

India has also revoked visas for Pakistani nationals and given them 48 hours to leave the country. Additionally, Indian diplomats have been withdrawn from Islamabad, further escalating the diplomatic standoff.

Pakistan, in retaliation, has closed its airspace to Indian flights, suspended trade, and revoked the 1972 Shimla Agreement, which has been a key element in the peace process between the two countries. These actions have only added to the already tense situation, as both nations engage in military and diplomatic responses.

General Dwivedi’s visit emphasizes India’s commitment to securing the region. He has previously stated that Pakistan is the “epicentre of terrorism,” noting that a significant number of militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir have links to Pakistan-based groups.

Despite a ceasefire agreement in place, there have been reports of skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC), further fueling fears of an escalation. International organizations, including the United Nations, have called for both nations to exercise restraint and seek peaceful solutions to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

The growing tensions have already started to impact regional stability and market confidence, leaving many concerned about the potential for more serious confrontations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
