In a major boost to the Indian Navy’s strength, India and France have finalized an inter-governmental agreement for the purchase of 26 Rafale-Marine (Rafale-M) fighter jets. Valued at approximately ₹63,000 crore, or around $7.4 billion, the deal was signed on April 28, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in the growing defense partnership between the two countries.
The deal includes 22 Rafale-M single-seater jets and 4 Rafale B twin-seater trainer jets. While the Rafale B jets are not carrier-compatible, they will be used for training pilots at land bases. These new aircraft are set to replace the aging fleet of MiG-29K jets currently operating from India’s aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.
Deliveries of the Rafale-M jets are expected to begin within 37 months from the signing of the contract. The full fleet is likely to be inducted into the Navy by the year 2030. Along with the aircraft, the agreement covers extensive training programs for Indian Navy pilots and maintenance staff. Training will be conducted both in India and France, ensuring smooth operations once the jets are deployed. The package also includes performance-based logistics and after-sales support to maintain high operational availability.
This deal is a part of India’s larger plan to modernize its armed forces and reduce its dependence on Russian-origin defense equipment. It also strengthens the ‘Make in India’ vision, as Dassault Aviation, the manufacturer of Rafale jets, is exploring the possibility of setting up a final assembly line in India for future orders. The collaboration is expected to create thousands of jobs and boost India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem.
The induction of Rafale-M jets will significantly enhance India’s naval strength, especially at a time when China is expanding its maritime activities in the Indian Ocean region. With modern technology and superior capabilities, these jets will give India a strong advantage in maintaining security and stability in the region.
The ₹63,000 crore Rafale-M deal not only reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its defense forces but also deepens strategic ties with France. It represents a crucial step towards achieving greater self-reliance and stronger security in an increasingly competitive Indo-Pacific region.
