A massive explosion shook the Shahid Rajaee port near Bandar Abbas, Iran, on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The blast killed at least 40 people and injured more than 1,200 others.
The explosion happened after a fire broke out in a warehouse that was storing hazardous chemicals, including sodium perchlorate. This chemical is often used in making missile propellants. The fire quickly grew out of control, causing a huge blast and sending a thick cloud of black smoke into the sky. The shockwave from the explosion shattered windows and damaged buildings several kilometers away.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene to rescue and treat the injured. Many victims were taken to hospitals nearby and even to medical centers in Shiraz. Firefighters worked hard to control the blaze, using helicopters to help put out the flames.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited the injured in the hospital and called for a full investigation into the cause of the blast. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also expressed his condolences and demanded a thorough inquiry to check if negligence or sabotage was involved.
Russia has sent emergency aid to Iran, including firefighting aircraft and rescue teams, to assist in handling the crisis.
The Shahid Rajaee port is Iran’s largest container terminal and a key hub for the country’s trade. After the explosion, port operations were disrupted, although some services have now partially resumed.
This tragedy has left the nation mourning and raised serious questions about safety measures at major industrial sites.
