The Central Government has imposed President’s Rule in Manipur due to continued ethnic violence and political instability. This decision came after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025.
For the past 21 months, Manipur has faced ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Over 250 people have died, and thousands have been displaced. The situation worsened, making it difficult for the government to function effectively.
On February 13, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification, stating that the state government could not operate under constitutional provisions. As a result, the President of India has taken over the administration, and the state assembly has been suspended.
Under President’s Rule, Manipur will be governed directly by the Central Government. The Governor will oversee the administration until a new government is formed through fresh elections.
Manipur has experienced President’s Rule multiple times in the past due to political instability and violence. However, the current situation is particularly concerning because of the prolonged ethnic conflict.
The imposition of President’s Rule aims to restore law and order in Manipur. The coming months will be crucial in determining how soon peace can return to the state.
