India and Italy Sign New Defence Industry Pact to Boost Military Cooperation

On April 16, 2025, India and Italy took a big step towards stronger military and industrial cooperation by signing a new defence industry agreement. This pact is part of the Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025–2029 and focuses on boosting defence manufacturing, technology sharing, and joint production of military equipment.

The agreement aims to create a detailed Defence Industrial Roadmap that will guide both countries in working together on defence projects. India’s Ministry of Defence and Italy’s defence industry leaders will collaborate on co-production and co-development of key military platforms.

An important part of the plan is a partnership between the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) and Italy’s AIAD (Federation of Italian Companies for Aerospace, Defence, and Security). This will open doors for joint ventures and the sharing of advanced defence technologies.

The pact also focuses on military interoperability. It includes plans for more joint military exercises, exchange programs, and closer cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, which is a key area for global security.

In addition, India and Italy will enhance their maritime cooperation. They plan to work together in areas like search-and-rescue missions and response to marine pollution.

The agreement also covers cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and the fight against transnational crime. Both countries have agreed to hold regular meetings to coordinate efforts in these areas.

This new partnership builds on the strategic agreement made in 2023 and shows a strong commitment from both nations to deepen their defence relationship.
